so we are keeping it pulled back till it grows out.

EEEEEK. I can relate. My six year old decided to give herself a haircut a couple of weeks ago. Chopped her all one length (waist length) hair, giving herself a set of ultra-short horizontal bangs.
I was thrilled, really.
